In this webinar, Candace Blancett, M.S., US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), will present her work on preparing and quantifying pathogenic viruses for electron microscopy in Biosafety Laboratory (BSL) 3-4 settings. Topics will include negative staining of pathogenic viruses1 and virus quantification using STEM2. Using mPrep/g capsules to eliminate grid handling in the BSL 3-4 suite resulted in easier, safer processing and more reproducible sample preparation.

About the Speaker

Candace Blancett, M.S., is a laboratory technician at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID). She has 8 years of experience working in BSL3 and BSL4 environments performing various histological, electron microscopy, and molecular diagnostic techniques.

Takaways

  • A safe, effective method to process grids in biocontainment without directly handling them.
  • Easy, simultaneous preparation of multiple viral samples on multiple grids.
  • Consistent results.
  • Unlike other virus quantification methods, EM uniquely counts all virus particles and simultaneously provides morphology.
